BCGL Banter: Week 5 Recap

Filed on October 9, 2024

HONKY TONK, ANYWHERE - A local barfly reported seeing the Grady Grunts team owner stumbling in an alley late Tuesday muttering the lyrics from a Garth Brooks song:

Well, I guess I was wrong, I just don’t belong
But then, I’ve been there before
Everything’s all right, I’ll just say goodnight
And I’ll show myself to the door

Unfortunately, things didn’t improve on the scoreboard after Week 5 as the Grunts have fallen to 0-5 and a consistent hold on last place in the league. Let this be a reminder to all the other owners in the league. Jeff’s not just our commissioner. Jeff is also our friend in low places.

Here’s more of what happened in Week 5…

Da Bears 163.95, Underdogs 133.60
If this were an episode of Pee-wee’s Playhouse, the secret word of the day would have been under. Da Bears and Underdogs both underwhelmed as neither team reached their projected point total for the week. On the positive side, Da Bears found a victory and Underdogs found Mickey Mouse on a visit to Disney.

Poppers 264.50, Grady’s Grunts 201.80
The Grunts rebounded from last week’s 110 point outing by eclipsing 200 points! Sadly, all they have to show for it is another loss in the standings. This matchup of current and former league commissioners reminds us that there still can be a peaceful transition of power when one side has all the points.

2008 Lions 247.35, Losing INC 195.60
The Lions (Caleb) broke 200 pts for the first time in their BCGL career and didn’t show Losing INC (Collin) much brotherly love. Kirk Cousins set the tone with his 70 point night and Losing INC couldn’t close the gap. Losing INC becomes just the second team to have 1,000 points scored against them this season.

Uncle Rico 213.90, Pongo Pack 193.60
This contest between two (former?) men of the cloth harkened back to the legendary religious revivals of yore. The battle of wits and debate was spirited but ended as we’ve come to expect: Pongo Pack falling short. Uncle Rico’s hatred for other owners is harsh but once again he practiced what he preaches.

Mean Machine 203.80, Braden’s Bandits 194.55
Mean Machine found another switch and flipped it for their second consecutive win after starting the season 0-3. Lamar Jackson (66pts) did the heavy lifting and more even scoring from Branden’s Bandits wasn’t quite enough to overcome the smallest margin of victory for the week.

Wall Street Journals 208.70, Paul & Glover Phenomenal Team 180.40
Paul & Glover seemed invincible through the first four weeks of the season - never scoring below 200 pts. Yet, like Rocky vs Ivan Drago, Wall Street Journals stood toe to toe with the #1 team and showed that they are human after all. Both teams are contenders for the championship to come!
